    For anyone who has problems or gets stuck at the splash screen with the message “Cannot connect to the app store”. This is (weirdly) what helped me:

    – install the app store version first
    – start it and check “Preferences – Activation”. It should say “read-only” mode.
    – quit it
    – overwrite it with the version you downloaded here
    – start it again (and block connection to Ulysses servers)

    Check “Preferences – Activation” again. It should now display “Ulysses is activated through SetApp”.

    Done!

    Worked for me.

    SIP must be off and Ulysses app must be in Applications folder

    my comment was in reply to clstrfcuk. I know you need SIP disabled to actually do it, but I tried the dude’s method and did not work.
